“Mum has independence and support, I have complete peace of mind”

For Sharon and her brother Paul, helping their mum Brenda to downsize to a new Churchill apartment at Thackeray Lodge was not just the right thing to do for her, it meant a big weight off their shoulders too, and has brought tremendous peace of mind for them both.

Looking back on the move, Sharon says: “I have to say that the whole experience was positive. Mum has settled really well and loves it there. From the help and guidance received from Churchill prior to the move, to the continued assistance of Amanda the Lodge Manager, who seems to be 'superwoman' and really involves herself with the residents, building a strong sense of community. Both my brother and I are very happy and satisfied knowing Mum is safe and secure.”

At the age of 92 Brenda remains fiercely independent, but she had suffered an unsettling time recently after her husband sadly died, leaving her with a property that was difficult to manage all on her own. She moved in with her son Paul for a short time and was looking to buy somewhere more convenient, but after seeing apartments available to rent at Thackeray Lodge she decided to give Churchill Living a try.

Sharon and her brother were closely involved in the decision. Sharon says: “Renting was the perfect option for mum, as it gives more flexibility and is less of a financial commitment. It really made sense for someone in mum’s situation, and it should give her more options for her future needs. Churchill explained all the options very well and could not have been more helpful throughout the process.”

On first impressions of Thackeray Lodge, Sharon says: “The first time we walked through the door it was clear that it would fit all mum’s needs. She can stay fully independent in a safe and supportive environment. She’s keeping in touch with all her old friends as well as making new ones, she gets plenty of visitors, and she dips in and out of the social activities when she wants to.”

On the social side of things, Sharon adds: “Amanda does a great job of making everyone feel welcome and included, without any pressure to join in if they don’t want to. There are some very interesting characters who live there and I’ve enjoyed getting to know them myself when I go to visit, which I do very often.”

The biggest positive for Sharon is seeing her mum happy and settled, which in turn brings big benefits for her. “It gives me complete peace of mind knowing mum can enjoy her independence, with help available if she ever needs it. In her old house it would always be me or my brother who got the call to fix things when they went wrong or deal with any problems. Now we can be there for the things that really matter and enjoy much more quality time with mum, and all those old worries are taken away.”
