When Martin and Frances moved to Eddington Lodge 16 months ago, they were looking for more than just a new home. They were looking for a community.
Having previously lived in an apartment in Windermere surrounded by holiday lets and second homes, they found there were few opportunities to build lasting connections with neighbours.
"We were the only owner-occupiers there," explains Martin. "People were always coming and going. Moving here is the best thing we've ever done."
Since arriving at Eddington Lodge, the couple have become well-known among fellow Owners for their monthly baking sessions, providing homemade treats for the Lodge's regular coffee mornings.
Thanks to Martin's background as a baker, the pair have turned their passion into a popular tradition that Owners look forward to each month.
"We bake once a month for the coffee morning," says Frances. "It's something we enjoy doing and everyone seems to love it too."
But the coffee mornings are about much more than cake. The events also help raise money for a charitable cause close to Martin's heart. Working alongside members of Windermere Golf Club, Martin organises a toy appeal each year, encouraging Owners, locals and club members to support local families. The donated toys are distributed to food banks in Kendal and Ulverston ahead of Christmas.
"We buy around 100 toys and Owners contribute towards them," says Martin. "It's a lovely way for people to come together and help others in the local community."
The couple are also heavily involved in organising monthly Sunday roast lunches at the Lodge, bringing Owners together around the dining table and ensuring nobody has to spend time alone if they don't want to.
"Last Christmas we had 21 people join us for lunch," says Martin. "Everyone helps out. Some people prepare vegetables, others bring dishes down, and together we make it work."
For Martin and Frances, these events embody everything they value about life at Eddington Lodge.
"We've got a lovely crowd here," says Martin. "Everybody gets on really well and if anyone needs help, there's always somebody there."
That sense of friendship and support extends throughout the Lodge, helped by a welcoming atmosphere and a dedicated Lodge Manager, Pamela.
"Pamela is lovely," says Frances. "She's very caring and makes a real difference."
Alongside their involvement in Lodge life, Martin remains an active member of Windermere Golf Club, helping to organise competitions throughout the year, while Frances continues to enjoy baking simply for the pleasure of it.
Looking back on their move, the couple agree that it is the people who make Eddington Lodge special.
"It's the community," says Martin. "Everybody joins in, everybody helps each other and we've made some wonderful friends. That's what makes living here so enjoyable."
