Abingdon-on-Thames is a historic market town on the River Thames, a few miles from Oxford and among the oldest towns in England. A shopping precinct, regular markets, and a riverside setting give it plenty of appeal, with everyday amenities close by, making it a pleasant place to enjoy retirement.
Beyond the town, the Thames Path follows the river in both directions, while the countryside of the Vale of White Horse and the spires of Oxford are close at hand. Good bus and road links make Oxford, Didcot, and wider Oxfordshire easy to reach for days out.
Local highlights
The Ock Valley Walk follows the River Ock on gentle, mostly level paths. Benches, gravel and paved routes, and a slightly wild, wooded feel make it an easy, soothing stroll that still connects neatly back to the town centre.
