Meet Lodge Manager Debbie: “The best job I’ve ever had”

At Churchill Living developments, the Lodge Manager plays a key role in creating the welcoming, supportive atmosphere that Owners and guests value so much. At Dreton Lodge in Drayton, that friendly face is Debbie, who joined the Churchill Living team five months ago and has already made a big impression on the community at the Lodge.

From organising social events to being on hand to help Owners day to day, Debbie’s role is all about making sure life at the Lodge runs smoothly while helping neighbours feel connected.

A new chapter at Dreton Lodge

Before becoming Lodge Manager, Debbie worked for a company supplying beds and medical equipment to hospitals across the UK. The role saw her travelling and meeting a wide range of people, but when she was made redundant, she found herself searching for something new.

“I felt a bit lost at first. You spend so long doing one job, the thought of something new makes you nervous.” Debbie said, “Then I saw the Lodge Manager role advertised and thought, I can do that. From day one it has really been wonderful.” She added.

Although the role came with plenty to learn, Debbie says the support from Churchill Living made the transition easy. “Churchill has been so good with me and offered lots of training to keep us on top of everything. Everyone has been so helpful. I’m honestly really proud to be a part of the team here – I love it!”

No two days are the same

Debbie says that the variety of the role is one of the things she enjoys most.

“No two days are ever the same.” She explains, “Being there for the Owners is wonderful and so rewarding. You build such a lovely neighbourly relationship with them and they’re all absolutely fantastic.”

Whether it’s helping to resolve an issue or simply being present to have a chat with them, Debbie says supporting the Owners is the most valuable aspect of her job.

“One thing I’ve noticed is that if anyone ever has a problem, it’s always resolved for them. We can help out or, chances are, there is an Owner who knows someone who knows someone. I really, really enjoy the job, I’d even say it is the best job I’ve ever had. It’s rare that anyone ever gets the chance to say that!”

Fostering a sense of community

Bringing people together is at the heart of Debbie’s role. She regularly organises social gatherings at the Lodge, from relaxed coffee mornings to informal get-togethers, helping Owners get to know one another.

“What I love most is seeing everyone together. Even if it’s just a coffee morning, something simple like that, its lovely seeing people connect and socialise. They could be from two completely different worlds, but they all have such incredible stories and they get to share them with one another.” She commented, “We’re always thinking of new things we can do to get the community together at Dreton Lodge!”

She recalls how one Owner, who initially kept to themselves, has gradually become more involved as time has gone on.

“He never really got involved at first, I can imagine it was quite a daunting experience for him, so we just kept a close eye and ensured he had everything he needed! Now, after a while, he has opened up and has actually started getting to know people. It’s moments like that that make the job so rewarding, these are people’s lives after all!”

For Debbie, that sense of connection is what makes Dreton Lodge such a special place to work, “It makes me feel good coming into work. I definitely don’t dread Mondays anymore! I always look forward to seeing everyone’s faces at the start of the week, they always greet me with a smile.”

“It really just feels like you’re making such a difference in their lives and that’s so fulfilling.” Debbie added.
