Local Hero Awards celebrated in Hampshire!

Churchill Living has recognised the remarkable contributions of over 60s in Hampshire at Austen Lodge, Basingstoke as part of its first-ever Local Hero Awards, celebrating inspirational people who are making a lasting difference in their communities.

Rosemarie Humpage, 86, from Winchester, has been crowned Hampshire’s Local Hero.

For 43 years, Winchester Bereavement Support has provided invaluable help to almost 3,000 local people. Rosemarie has been a dedicated Bereavement Visitor for more than 15 years and an active committee member for almost as long.

Through her kind and compassionate approach, she has supported countless individuals through grief, simply by listening and being there when needed most. As one client explained: “When my wife died I felt lost and lonely. It left a big hole. Rosemarie didn’t fill that hole, but she helped me to manage my grief. I was able to find a future when, at first, I didn’t think I had one.”

Beyond one-to-one support, Rosemarie plays an active role in organising events, including volunteering at local marathons in all weathers, and is always ready to help fellow team members. Still active at 86, she has been described as “an absolute treasure” by those who know her.

Rosemarie said of her award and what the donation will mean: “I feel truly honoured to have been chosen as Hampshire’s Local Hero, it’s something I never expected. Winchester Bereavement Support means so much to me, and I’m so proud to be part of a group of volunteers who give their time so selflessly. The £1,000 donation will help us continue to reach more people who are struggling with loss and need someone to listen.”

Leonie Mountney, Chair of Winchester Bereavement Support, said: “Winchester Bereavement Support is run entirely by volunteers and our Bereavement Visitors are such special people who willingly give their time to helping those who have lost a loved one. Rosemarie has been a dedicated Visitor for nearly 15 years and supports the charity in so many ways. She is truly exceptional and we are delighted she has received this award from Churchill Living in recognition of her work with us. She really is a local hero”.

Two others were Highly Commended in the awards:

  • Tony Knight, 79, from Winchester.
A tireless volunteer with Winchester Radio and its predecessor since 1978, Tony has given decades of service to hospital patients and the wider community. He played a pivotal role in the station’s evolution into a full Ofcom-licensed health and wellbeing service in 2019. Despite recent ill-health, he still broadcasts five hours a week and remains a much-loved presence at community events.
  • Gerald Merritt, 86, from Basingstoke.
An extraordinary community volunteer, Gerald has raised funds for many charities, served as a football referee and mentor for over 60 years, and co-founded the Basingstoke & Deane Over 55s Forum, now with over 500 members. He organises day trips that are a lifeline for older people, offering companionship and connection. His kindness and thoughtfulness have touched countless lives.

Spencer J McCarthy, Chairman and CEO of Churchill Living, said: “The Local Hero Awards have highlighted the incredible contributions older people are making in communities across the country. Rosemarie, Tony and Gerald exemplify how dedication, compassion, and energy can transform lives and places. We’re proud to celebrate their achievements and thank them for everything they do.”

Churchill Living plans to make the Local Hero Awards an annual celebration of the UK’s over 60s who go above and beyond in their communities.
