New Exmouth development name dedicated to local Exe Estuary wildlife

Avocet Lodge has been unveiled as the name of a brand-new Churchill Living development currently under construction in the heart of Exmouth.

Located on Lower Fore Street, the development was named by competition winner Clare Smith, whose inspiration came from the rich wildlife of the nearby Exe Estuary. Mrs Smith was awarded £100 by Churchill Living for naming the new development.

Discussing her name for the Lodge, Mrs Smith said: “Well of course the area is known for the avocets who come to the Exe estuary in the winter. It is also the name of the local train line from Exmouth to Exeter.”

Avocets are elegant wading birds with distinctive black-and-white feathers and long legs. They are a familiar sight along the estuary, which is internationally recognised as an important habitat for overwintering species.

When complete, Avocet Lodge will offer 54 stylish one- and two-bedroom apartments, along with six two-bedroom cottages, designed especially for people aged 60 and over seeking a lower-maintenance, more relaxed lifestyle.

Each apartment will be self-contained and feature a colour-coordinated kitchen with modern integrated appliances. Residents will also benefit from an exclusive lounge with a coffee bar, Wi-Fi and views over landscaped gardens. A 24-hour Careline system and a dedicated on-site Lodge Manager provides additional reassurance.

The cottages offer the same high-quality specification, with the added benefit of private gardens – ideal for homeResidents with pets.

In line with Churchill tradition, the six cottages will have a slightly different but complementary name and will be known as Lapwing Mews. This name also honours another remarkable species found in the Exe. The estuary is an internationally important haven for Northern Lapwings, which can be spotted here all year-round.

Jo Ridehalgh, Divisional Marketing Lead at Churchill Living, adds: “We are always keen to involve the local community in naming our developments, helping to ensure each one has a meaningful and lasting connection to its surroundings. ‘Avocet Lodge’ is a wonderful tribute to the wildlife that calls the Exe estuary ‘home’ and perfectly reflects the character of this new community, which will be home to many people for years to come.”

Exmouth is a vibrant coastal town in East Devon, ideally positioned where the River Exe meets the sea and at the gateway to the Jurassic Coast. The town boasts a two-mile sandy beach and is just 10 miles from Exeter. Its bustling high street offers a mix of well-known retailers, independent shops and cafés, alongside essential amenities including banks, a pharmacy, a Post Office and a Marks & Spencer Foodhall.

The scenic Exe Estuary Trail connects Exmouth with Exeter Quay and is popular with walkers, cyclists and birdwatchers. The area is also a hotspot for watersports, including sailing, kayaking and kitesurfing, which are just as thrilling to watch as they are to take part in.
