On Friday 15th August apartment Owners at Paddock Lodge proved that they know how to combine heartfelt remembrance with a good old-fashioned knees-up, as they gathered to mark the 80th anniversary of VJ Day in style.
Tea, cake and a hearty sing-along set the tone for an afternoon steeped in history. Heritage Paddock Wood gave a fascinating talk on the significance of the war in the rural town, ensuring the event struck just the right balance between reflection and celebration. They shared with pride that the mastermind behind the D Day landings – Sir Fredrick Morgan KCB had been born at Mascalls, in Paddock Wood.
Local author Jane Chappell gave a reading from her wartime love story A Very British Affair – a novel set on the very same street as Paddock Lodge – drawing knowing smiles from the audience who could picture the story unfolding just outside their front door. The book’s illustrator, Charlotte Chappell, was also on hand, not only to talk about her work but to lead the rousing sing-along from the piano.
Charlotte also shared her recent interview with George Durrant, a Second World War veteran who served in Burma. The conversation was arranged by the Royal British Legion – it was part of their educational outreach programme - and was a poignant reminder of the personal stories behind the history books. George, who appeared on BBC Breakfast News that very morning to celebrate his 101st birthday, was fondly spoken of by all.
Lodge Manager Maggie Duggan, who helped organise the event, summed up the atmosphere perfectly: "Our Owners have such a zest for life that sometimes I can struggle to keep up with them! They know how to have a good time and always have something happening in their social calendars. We couldn’t let the VJ Day 80th anniversary go by without giving it due recognition, so with the help of the community it was a joy to put this event together for them.”
The Royal British Legion website has a vast array of resources, articles and interviews available, including those with veterans from VJ Day. If you would like to know more about your local heritage, the British Association for Local History can help point you in the right direction to get started. If you prefer your wartime history with a dash of romance, then A Very British Affair is available online in paperback or on Kindle.
