Staying young at heart: Julia’s story of finding joy in community and volunteering

Retirement doesn’t have to mean slowing down. For many Churchill Living Owners, it marks the beginning of a richer, more fulfilling chapter, one filled with purpose, connection and new experiences. At Mortimer Lodge in Bridgnorth, Julia Finch is proving exactly that. With a life rooted in community spirit, volunteering and creativity, she’s thriving in her retirement, supported by the convenience, comfort and sociable atmosphere that Churchill Living offers.

Julia and her husband chose Mortimer Lodge for its unbeatable location and ease of living: “What I like best about Mortimer Lodge is its location, it has everything I need on my doorstep” she commented, “And not having to worry about maintaining a house and garden is a big relief.”

At the Lodge, they have become part of a warm and welcoming community, “There are lots of social events if you’re interested.” Julia said, “If you’re considering moving, look at it as a new adventure – it’s what you make of it!”

One of Julia’s biggest passions is volunteering at the Severn Valley Railway, where she works in the Bridgnorth gift shop and helps visitors discover more about the town.

“It’s run as a proper railway, with training and safety checks.” She explained, “I’ve got a flair for selling, I’m a very good saleswoman! Every sale I make is good for the railway and it is always nice having a chat to customers.”

For Julia, the railway offers more than just a pastime, it gives her a sense of belonging, “It’s like being part of a big, lovely family. I enjoy meeting new people, I’m always laughing and smiling! Everyone knows your name and genuinely cares, and they always welcome my husband with open arms. It has truly become a way of life for me.” She added.

Julia’s volunteering is just one part of her active lifestyle. She plays in a ukulele band, sings with the Got To Sing choir, fundraises for Cancer Research and previously volunteered at the local museum. At the Lodge, she joins neighbours for UNO nights, and the Lodge Manager also frequently organises activities for Julia and her fellow Owners to enjoy.

“Staying busy keeps you young!” she laughed, “I’m too busy to be poorly or slow down.”

The couple quickly became part of the wider Bridgnorth community shortly after moving in. After attending a local “Together at Christmas” event for people spending the holidays alone, they helped organise a similar event, catering for around 140 people and delivering meals to those who can’t attend in person.

“The sense of community here is wonderful” Julia said, “When we first arrived, we explored the town because we don’t like going into anything with our eyes closed… and people were greeting us on the street! It truly is a lovely place to live.”

For Julia, Mortimer Lodge provides the perfect base for an active, rewarding retirement. Offering security, social opportunities and the freedom to do what she loves.

“It would’ve been easy to sit back and do nothing when we first moved in, but we didn’t.” she added, “I’m just enjoying what I’m doing and living in the moment.”

Her story is a reminder that with the right surroundings and mindset, retirement can be a time to grow, connect and truly thrive.
