Friendship on the doorstep: Barbara & Laura’s journey at Caxton Lodge

The idea that moving later in life means losing independence or social connections couldn’t be further from the truth, just ask Barbara and Laura. As Owners at Churchill’s Caxton Lodge in Tenterden, these two friends are living proof that retirement can be a time of new beginnings, stronger friendships, and a vibrant social life. Since moving into neighbouring apartments at the Lodge, Barbara and Laura have found comfort, companionship, and a community that makes later life richer than ever.

Barbara and Laura first met through a mutual friend, but it was Churchill that truly brought them together. When Laura moved into Caxton Lodge, Barbara soon followed, downsizing from her five-bedroom home into a secure two-bedroom apartment right next door to Laura, “It was nice knowing I was moving in to somewhere with a friendly face waiting for me.”

What started as the occasional lunch and glass of wine has grown into a deep and enduring friendship. Today, the pair enjoy coffee mornings, film nights, and Lodge events side by side. “Our friendship has gotten stronger, we see more of each other. You know how it is, over a glass of wine you always end up having a nice heart to heart!” Barbara shared.

“We share a lot with each other, we enjoy spending time together and sharing outrageous stories from our youth! We do pretty well together.” Laura added.

For Barbara, peace of mind was a big part of the move. Regular trips to visit her sister in the Cotswolds had made leaving her former house an anxious experience. Now, she knows her apartment is safe and secure whenever she is away.

Laura was drawn to the strong sense of community at Caxton Lodge. Before moving, she often felt lonely when she wasn’t surrounded by her friends, but that changed the moment she moved in. Laura watched Caxton as it was constructed and knew it was where she wanted to be; “It’s the community and the camaraderie,” she said, “We have lots of laughs and giggles, it’s good for you! It isn’t healthy to be on your own, people aren’t meant to be alone. I have no regrets about moving here.”

For both ladies, Churchill Living has offered them a vibrant social life. From fish and chip evenings to recent defibrillator training – arranged with some help from Laura – life at Caxton Lodge has consistently offered countless opportunities to connect. “I used to be a nurse, and I thought it was important for Owners at the Lodge to have some training in CPR and first-aid. It can be the difference between life and death, so I was happy when the Lodge helped set that up. I felt quite strongly about it. I was so well supported too, lots of people turned up and were on board with the training.” Laura commented.

Caxton Lodge offers exactly the balance they were searching for: a welcoming community with plenty of activities, but privacy when they want it. “Everyone here is nice, switched on, and young at heart! If you’re ever unsure about something, there is always someone who has the answer, or knows someone who knows someone. It’s a really supportive community.” Barbara added.

For Barbara and Laura, Churchill has provided more than just a new home, it has given them a renewed sense of belonging, a stronger friendship, and the freedom to enjoy life on their own terms. Their story is just one example of how Churchill’s communities help Owners feel safe, supported and socially connected, whilst still enjoying the independence they value.

At Churchill, moving isn’t about slowing down, it’s about finding a new lease of life surrounded by friends, comfort, and opportunity.
