Historic Spitfire takes Churchill Owner Fred on a sky-high adventure

Churchill Living Owner, Fred Cochrane, recently ticked an item off his bucket list and took to the skies in a Spitfire. In honour of turning 90 in December of this year, Fred took flight over the Northamptonshire countryside in The Grace Spitfire, even managing to undertake a barrel roll.

The Spitfire he flew in has an impressive history and was built at the Castle Bromwich shadow factory in 1944. Delivered by famous Air Transport Auxiliary pilot Jackie Moggridge to 485 RNZAF Squadron, it was originally a single seater fighter during the war – flying over 320 combat hours and accredited with shooting down the first enemy aircraft on D-Day.

“Flying in a Spitfire has been on my bucket list for as long as I can remember and finally doing it as I approach 90 was simply unforgettable. The views over Northamptonshire were breathtaking, and managing a barrel roll made it all the more thrilling. It is moments like these that make life special, you’re never too old to try something new!” Fred commented.

When Fred isn’t soaring through the skies, he enjoys a very different pace of life at Manor Lodge in Ruddington. The Lodge itself comprises 43 one- and two-bedroom apartments, self-contained, with fully fitted kitchens and beautifully landscaped gardens. Some apartments even boast balconies overlooking the beautifully landscaped gardens. The Lodge is complete with free parking and access to the exclusive Owners’ Lounge, featuring a coffee bar and Wi-Fi.
