Julia's House Fundraiser Colin celebrated in Churchill's Local Hero Awards

Churchill Living has recognised the remarkable contributions of over 60s in Dorset as part of its first-ever Local Hero Awards, celebrating inspirational people who are making a lasting difference in their communities.

Colin Simons, 84, from Lilliput (Poole), has been crowned Dorset’s Local Hero. Colin has dedicated many years to raising funds for Julia’s House, collecting well over £77,000 to support the charity’s vital work. He grows plants to sell for fundraising, works regular half days at a local charity shop, volunteers in the Julia’s House hospice gardens, and is always willing to help anyone in need.

Known for his tireless energy and generosity, Colin has become a much-loved figure in his community and within Churchill Lodge, the over 60s development where he lives. His commitment to making a difference shows how one person’s determination can have a powerful and lasting impact.

To recognise his achievement, Churchill’s own charity the Churchill Foundation made a £1,000 donation to Julia’s House on his behalf.

Colin said of his award: “I’m so incredibly grateful to Churchill for granting me the Local Hero Award for Dorset and providing £1,000 funding for such a worthwhile charity. This award though is dedicated to all my neighbours at Churchill Lodge who have supported Julia’s House over the last decade, supporting me to raise more than £77,000 for the charity.”

Spencer J McCarthy, Chairman and CEO of Churchill Living, said: “The Local Hero Awards have highlighted the incredible contributions older people are making in communities across the country. Colin is an inspiring example of selflessness and dedication, and we are proud to celebrate his achievements and thank him for everything he does.”

Churchill Living plans to make the Local Hero Awards an annual celebration of the UK’s over 60s who go above and beyond in their communities.

Churchill opened the doors to Churchill Lodge in Lilliput nearly 20 years ago, and a small number of apartments are currently available for resale on the second-hand market. We also have brand new apartments available to buy now in nearby Lymington, and new developments coming soon in Christchurch and Salisbury.
